What I Learned From Making A Short Film Plus Some Updates

It looks like I am done the final rough edit of AGAIN. It’s interesting how much it changed from the original storyboard. The end product is decent, but NOT what I want. The deadline is this Wednesday. I truthfully only had a month or two to work on it. It’s frustrating when you have a vision in your head, but you can’t express it either do to budget or time restrictions. This short was created for a production class.  So, for the purposes of this class I think this film goes beyond the expectations. For myself, it is nowhere near what I can do or what I wanted to do. I’d love to reshoot and redo this entire film with a proper cinematographer, director, and absolute stunning lighting! This isn’t on the top of my to do list, but If I ever wanted to pursue making a really insanely dark short film, this would be it.

What I have learned from editing and shooting AGAIN, my first short film over 5 minutes in length:

  1. Patience
  2. Take breaks
  3. Sacrificing
  4. Compromising
  5. Rewarding
  6. Patience again…again…again…and AGAIN! (no pun intended!)
There’s more I could include in that list. As a sound designer, I was able to utilize some techniques or methods I use for sound designing to editing actual footage. I am seriously fortunate that I have been using Adobe products(specifically photoshop) for 10+ years. I haven’t used earlier editions of Final Cut Pro, but I have 10…and I know there’s a lot of criticism about it, but I didn’t even watch or read one tutorial…picked up and did it. Same feel and flow as photoshop except with a moving image.
Also, I have the most upmost respect for people that did editing before non-linear editing emerged. Seriously…DAMN.
I think I’d enjoy editing it more if it wasn’t my own camera work. I think for me it’s kind of like how people don’t enjoy eating food they make(not everyone, but some people)…I guess it’s the same for me with this.
Updates

This summer I’m taking a production class on sound aesthetics in film.  This fall I’m taking a production class on experimental film/multimedia. I’m actually really exciting about the “science of sound” class I’m taking this fall also. The class focuses primarily on musical sound. I’m sure I’ll be overwhelmed with awe and stuff to write in the up coming months! I’m taking other classes (total of 18 credits this fall) but those two classes I’m the most excited about.

Oh, also for my horror film’s final project I’ll make sure to post it here when it’s finished. I’m just editing the dialogue and it should be done!

Illusionarium still is underway. Not sure if I mentioned this before or not, but our debut album will be a concept album. I’ll make sure to keep everyone informed as we progress in the writing stage:)

Here are some screenshots I haven’t shared yet:

I hope everyone is having a great weekend,
